BlowPop has been at the forefront of Bristol's club culture for the past
five years. Launched by Dope on Plastic compiler John Stapleton at the Blue
Mountain Club, the music policy reflected the upsurge in demand for dance
music that broke with the house norm. Trip Hop and Big Beat were the
emerging genres filling record shop shelves and Dope on Plastic led the way.
With healthy doses of Funk, Hip hop and Red Stripe, BlowPop brought DJ¹s
like Jon Carter, Krash Slaughta, and Mr Scruff to the South West for the
first time. The Club was fast becoming the foremost place to hear new music
in the West Country.
Along the way John has been joined by the current promotion team and
residents the Scratch Perverts, Mr Craig, Dr Moody, Stereo 8 and All Funked
Up, maintaining BlowPop's place as one of Bristol's premier club nights. No
longer tied to the moniker of Big Beat, BlowPop strides over what is
becoming an increasingly homogenised club land. The night has evolved with
the music and now plays host to acts such as David Holmes, The Wiseguys,
Groove Armada, Morcheeba, The Freestylers, The Plump DJs, and Justin
Robertson.
Beyond the Blue Mountain Club, BlowPop's residents tour widely in the UK and
abroad - regularly playing across Europe and Australia. In London,
residencies have been held at Mass (Brixton) and the Red Star with regular
appearances at Fabric and Turnmills. The Festival Circuit has not escaped
either with BlowPop appearing on many a line up and the crew hosting
Glastonbury's Jazz/World backstage and VIP area. With a record label now in
tow, the BlowPop sound continues to travel far and wide.
